Proverbs 12:1 “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.”

I love knowledge. It is a marvelous thing that we have the intuition and ability to know something is true. That is the wonderful positive side, yet it is baffling that we also have the tendency to reject knowledge. Christ illustrated this in His parable of the sower and the seeds in Matthew 13. He compares our hearts and minds (the two are inseparable I believe) to soil and information or the Word to seeds planted on different types of soil. Crack open the spine of your Bible or Google Matthew 13 to find the types of soil and the results of the different types of planting seeds on fertile soil versus dry soil versus exposed seeds.

Based on Proverbs 12:1 and the parable it would appear that fertile soil-heart/mind that receives information well and produces fruit- is ready to receive the knowledge through discipline. One who is prepared and ready will be able to take that information however it comes, and it will be profitable and productive in that person’s life. Discipline is the hard word in the verse. You may want something badly, but like a child who is begging for something he doesn’t need, a wise mother will make sure that the child is prepared to receive, so as not to spoil and corrupt the child into thinking that he is his own authority or that blessing comes by any other way than through preparation. Reaping a harvest is great great blessing for the farmer who has worked so hard to prepare the soil and sow the seed and wait. As James 5:7 and 8 also illustrate,” Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.”
